Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme is a dog training programme that promotes socially acceptable dogs and creates responsible dog owners. The scheme is non competitive and is open to dogs of all ages and all breeds, whether Kennel Club registered or not.
All classes work on basics, focus around distractions and self control. Assessments are not compulsory. Group classes are not suitable for reactive dogs.
Puppy Foundation Assessment
Aims to provide a means of socialising puppies and to lay down a foundation for education and training. Exercises include:
· Attentive response to name
· Socialisation
· Handling and inspection
· Puppy recall
· Sit, down and stand positions
· Lead walking
· Stay for at least 10 secs)
· Food manners
Bronze Award
Emphasis is placed on the handler’s ability to handle, control and generally care for their dog in a domestic environment. The object of each exercise is to provide a standard of control. Certificate awarded on passing assessment.
Exercises include:
· Lead walking
· Control at a door / gate
· Controlled walk amongst people and dogs
· Stay for 1 min
· Grooming and examination
· Recall
Silver Award
Aims to build upon the skills learned in the Bronze Award whilst increasing the level of difficulty. The Silver Award is a natural progression of practical dog training skills and introduces new concepts. Certificate awarded on passing assessment.
Exercises include:
· Lead walking (on public highway)
· Stay for 2 mins
· Vehicle control
· Recall away from distractions
· Controlled greeting
· Food manners
Gold Award
Builds upon the skills learned in the Silver Award and develops more advance training skills of the dog and handler. Certificate awarded on passing assessment.
Exercises include:
· Lead walking (on public highway with changes of pace)
· Lead free walking
· Recall during lead free walk
· Down stay - out of sight
· Send dog to bed
Stop the dog at distance
